About Massage Therapy

Massage is the manipulation of soft tissue using the hands, arms, elbows, feet and mechanical devices. Water, light, heat and cold, and various chemical or herbal oils, lotions, creams and compounds can be used by massage therapists.

A complete medical condition and prescription record is kept by the therapist, because there are contraindications to Massage Therapy. Examples of contraindications are fever, thrombophlebitis (blood clots), uncontrolled high blood pressure, communicable disease, and intoxication; including certain pain relieving prescription drugs.  Different techniques are used for lupus and fibromyalgia.

Clothing is removed by the client in the privacy of the treatment room, and the client lies on the massage table and covers up completely with a sheet (and blanket if the client is cold.) Then the therapist knocks and asks if the client is ready and re-enters the room when the client is draped and comfortable. Only the portions of the body being worked on by the therapist are undraped, in order to maintain the client's warmth and modesty, according to Arkansas state law.

Massage can relieve painful muscle spasms and trigger points and help break up scar tissue. It increases lymphatic and blood circulation; thereby aiding conditions like neuropathy. And by encouraging the parasympathetic  response, massage creates an environment of relaxation thereby reducing mental and emotional tension as well as physical. This can reduce  high blood pressure and ease depression.

Sometimes a release form or RX from your MD will be required due to recent injury or condition.  It is wise to confer with your therapist previous to arriving for a massage if any situations arise that may create a health issue that massage would exacerbate, depending on the techniques used. There are no contraindications to Healing Touch. Do not plan stress creating situations for the rest of the day after your therapy; go home and RELAX. Drinking lots of pure water will assist the body in removing the toxins that the therapy has driven out of your tissues.
